Asus made fitness-centric VivoWatch has 10 days battery

There's been plenty of talk about the Apple Watch's battery, which lasts about a day on a full charge. Some consider that a weakness, and it's one that Asus may intend to exploit it before Samsung does. They just announced a new fitness-centric smartwatch for your phone, the VivoWatch - the device is geared more towards fitness applications such as tracking your activities, heart rate, sleep pattern, etc.



The Asus ZenWatch is not the most advanced or glamorous smartwatch, and it's certainly no true Apple Watch rival. The ViVoWatch seems to have a black and white display to save on power with a green LED strip below. The watch has a stainless steel body and an IP67 certification for dust and water resistance.

As you can tell, it’s not exactly running Android Wear, which explains how it manages to last for 10 days on a single charge. There are not much details available at this point and more will be revealed tomorrow at the Milan Design Week.

Samsung shows off affordable 128GB flash storage for smart devices

Most high-end smartphones rarely offer more than 128GB of onboard storage. The iPhone 6 maxes out at 128GB and so does the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The problem is that while everybody likes more storage some one of them are just not willing or able to pay top dollar for a top of the line flagship smartphone. Samsung sees an opportunity here which it’s going to plug with its new high-performance mobile memory storage based on eMMC 5.0 technology. The 128GB 3-bit NAND-based chip is primarily targeted at “mass market” smartphones and tablets. That’s just a fancy way of saying that this chip is meant for affordable mobile devices.

The Korean giant’s new storage is capable of 260MB/s for sequential data reading – the same performance level as eMMC 5.1 memory. Random data read and write operations of 6,000 IOPS and 5,000 IOPS respectively are also possible on the memory. The component’s IOPS speeds are up to ten times faster than those of a typical microSD card. Samsung’s new affordable flash storage is capable of easily handling HD video processing and multi-tasking.

The only thing Samsung didn’t mention in today’s press release is when it will start mass producing this new chip. Once it starts shipping the chips to OEMs we will starting seeing devices in the mid-range market offer up to 128GB onboard storage. We don’t know what device will Samsung’s new memory chip debut into. A high-profile mid-ranger from the Korean manufacturer seems like a solid candidate for the honor.

No. of tablet shipments surpassed netbook so easily in Q2 2011

Q2 2011 marks the first time in the history netbook numbers have been eclipsed by tablets, according to ABI Research. 13.6 million tablets were shipped in the quarter, besting the 7.3 million the diminutive laptops were able to clock in. When compared to the prior quarter, that works out to 112 percent or 7.2 million increase for the former, and a 1.1 million decline for the latter.

Media Tablets Eclipse Netbook Sales for the First Time in 2Q11

NEW YORK – October 20, 2011
Media tablet shipments surpassed netbook shipments this quarter, reaching 13.6 million units, compared to just 7.3 million netbooks. Netbooks had previously led the way with 8.4 million shipments in 1Q11, compared to just 6.4 million media tablets.

“This is a trend that we do not expect will reverse,” says Jeff Orr, group director, mobile devices. “As they are different segments, this is not a direct replacement behavior, but a changing of leadership for the most interesting device type.”

Driving media tablet interest is Apple’s iPad 2. 68% of the media tablet shipments in 2Q11 consisted of Apple iPad models. Consumers are choosing tablets over netbooks for a number of reasons. “Media tablets are perceived to be easy to use, compared to the keyboard and mouse interface of a netbook computer. Those who have avoided PCs because they are difficult to use – think the Baby Boomer generation and older – see media tablets as an opportunity to re-engage with Internet access. Cost, however, is certainly not a reason driving tablet interest, as the average media tablet costs approximately $600 and the average netbook is only about half of that,” says Orr.

While 32 million netbooks and 60 million media tablets are expected to ship worldwide in 2011, netbooks still hold interest in underserved countries, where PC penetration to the home, along with broadband services, are not widely available. Media tablet shipments will primarily cater to the early-adopter consumer audiences of Western Europe, the US, Japan, and South Korea.

ABI Research’s new market data, “Tablets, Netbooks, and Mobile CE Market Data,” provides forecasts for all ultra-mobile devices (UMDs), including netbooks, media tablets, UMPCs, mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and six types of mobile broadband-enabled consumer electronics (CE) devices.
